The town is small and generally quiet, with a population of approximately 12,700 inhabitants. There are several ancient convents and churches and the architecture of many of the houses of the town contain elements of the Moorish rule, between 711 and 1248, when the town was captured by Saint Ferdinand of Castile. The town has a number of lovely beaches of which tourists from all destinations flock to and are all within walking distance of the town centre. El Palmar is largely undeveloped as a result of strict building restrictions and is often free of people. The secondary beach of Los Caños de Meca is popular with young people and tends to have more visitors. The surrounding cove is ideal for windsurfing and there are many bars and restaurants along the seafront. The evenings are quite lively here and you can enjoy the local sherry and tapas in the authentic bars, or visit the Peña Flamenca to watch people dancing the ‘real’ flamenco, something which is imperative you do when you study Spanish in Vejer de la Frontera!
