The town is situated overlooking the straits of Gibraltar and is surrounded by orange groves and orchards. The town is small and generally quiet, with a population of approximately 12,700 inhabitants. The town is considered by many to be one of the most attractive in all of Spain, combining history and architecture with a modern feel. There are several ancient convents and churches and the architecture of many of the houses of the town contain elements of the Moorish rule, between 711 and 1248, when the town was captured by Saint Ferdinand of Castile. The main industries of the town are agriculture and fruit-farming and fighting bulls are bred locally. A running of the bulls is held annually to commemorate the cultural significance of the animals.
