The southern part of Quito, with its narrow streets, bars and small restaurants and historic architecture, was named as a UNESCO cultural heritage sight in 1978. The Spanish influence is very recognizable in this part of Quito and the old city remains much as it did at the end of Colonial times. The northern section has a more modern look. The streets are broader and have a distinctive pattern, but have just as much charm. With its gleaming office buildings and hoards of smart business people, the new city is leading Ecuador into the 21st century.  Taking time to explore both parts of Quito during your Spanish course will not disappoint.
