Study Italian in Taormina, a pretty town on the east coast of Sicily, with a population of approximately 11,000 inhabitants. Since the 19th century, the town has been a very popular tourist destination due to its beautiful sandy beaches and pleasant climate. The city was built high up on a hill forming the last projecting point of the mountain ridge that extends along the coast to this point from Cape Pelorus. The old town site is roughly 300 m above the sea, while a very steep and almost isolated rock which was crowned by a Saracen castle, rises about 150 m higher. The most remarkable monument remaining is the ancient theatre, one of the most celebrated ruins in Sicily. For the most part it is built from brick, indicating a Roman construction, but the arrangement and plan are in the Greek style. It is a fantastic example of foreign architecture and we consider it a 'must see' during your Italian course. The area around the city is stunning and with many places of tourist interest. Just to the south of the city is the nature reserve Isola Bella and the Capo Sant' Andrea grottos, examples of stunning natural beauty and tours of the area regularly take place. The city is located just a 45 minute drive away from Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano.
