The city was built high up on a hill forming the last projecting point of the mountain ridge that extends along the coast to this point from Cape Pelorus. The old town site is roughly 300 m above the sea, while a very steep and almost isolated rock which was crowned by a Saracen castle, rises about 150 m higher. The most remarkable monument remaining is the ancient theatre, one of the most celebrated ruins in Sicily. For the most part it is built from brick, indicating a Roman construction, but the arrangement and plan are in the Greek style.
