The French language diplomas D.E.L.F. (Diplome d'Etudes de Langue Française) and DALF (Approfondi Diplôme de Langue Française) were created in 1985 and awarded by the Ministère de l'Education Nationale. They are the only official diplomas of French language recognition as a foreign language around the world. The certificates are intended for non-French speakers who need to demonstrate and communicate their knowledge of French for professional reasons. The D.A.L.F, on the other hand, is a certified diploma intended as a prerequisite for admission to a French speaking university or college. Any students with a DALF are immediately exempt from doing any other language requirement entry to their chosen university or collefgde and can immediately follow a course in their chosen field. The student, however, must have a level II DELF before taking the DALF exam.
The communicative skills of the candidates are assessed on the basis of documents or real-life situations.
There are different levels according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, (CEFR) which are applied to each DELF exam. A1 and A2 (general user), which applies to those who should be able to understand and make themselves understood in a wide variety of everyday situations in a French-speaking environment.
The D.E.L.F. B1 and B2 (independent user) applies to those who should be able to operate in a more specialised area of interest such as economics, politics, business and so on. The DALF C1 and C2 is for those who have a high proficiency or command for the language.
Each of the exam tests the four communicative skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Each individual test will be assessed in an equal split (25 points), representing a total of 100 points. The results have a lifetime validity.
