Study Spanish in Santiago de Cuba
Study Spanish in Cuba's second city, Santiago de Cuba. Nestled between the foothills of the Sierra Maesta Mountains and the Caribbean ocean, Santiago de Cuba is a vibrant and vivacious city with a population of 490,000 inhabitants. Founded in 1514 by Spanish conquistador Diego Velazquez de Cuellar, Santiago is a very old city with a fascinating history. Although Cuba's second city, Santiago has had a considerable influence upon Cuban culture; Santiago was where Fidel Castro launched his nationalist revolution, where the first Bacardi factory was situated and where Salsa and Son originated. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, the region experienced an influx of French immigrants, many of which came from Haiti after the Haitian slave revolt of 1791. This added a further element to Santiago's cultural mix which was already rich with African and Spanish influences. The combination of African, French and Spanish influence is what has helped to shape Santiago's unique identity as a centre of culture, and what makes it such a fascinating environment in which to study Spanish today. There is a lot to see and do when you choose to study in Santiago de Cuba, from visiting its museums to enjoying its numerous attractive bars and restaurants typical of Cuba's southern region.
