Vejer de la Frontera is a beautiful Spanish hilltop town in the Cadiz province of Andalusia. The town is situated overlooking the straits of Gibraltar and is surrounded by orange groves and orchards. The town is small and generally quiet, with a population of approximately 12,700 inhabitants. The town is considered by many to be one of the most attractive in all of Spain, combining history and architecture with a modern feel. There are several ancient convents and churches and the architecture of many of the houses of the town contain elements of the Moorish rule, between 711 and 1248, when the town was captured by Saint Ferdinand of Castile. The main industries of the town are agriculture and fruit-farming and fighting bulls are bred locally. A running of the bulls is held annually to commerate the cultural significance of the animals. The town has a number of lovely beaches of which tourists from all destinations flock to and are all within walking distance of the town centre. El Palmar is largely undeveloped as a result of strict building restrictions and is often free of people. The secondary beach of Los Caños de Meca is popular with young people and tends to have more visitors. The surrounding cove is ideal for windsurfing and there are many bars and restaurants along the seafront. The evenings are quite lively here. One can enjoy the local sherry and tapas in the authentic bars, or visit the Peña Flamenca to watch people dancing the ‘real’ flamenco!
Learn Spanish among the Spaniards
Our partner school La Janda is a great place for a Spanish course and for learning Spanish. The school is located in an old Andalusian building typical of the nineteenth centuryand is in the old town district. It is a small school with 5 classrooms, a garden and a patio where lectures can be given, a library with Spanish literature and TV/Video at the disposal of the students. On arrival, all students undertake an oral or written exam to determine the right class for their level of Spanish in order to obtain the fastest improvement.
Social programme
The accommodation in Vejer de la Frontera is in the form of a host family, a shared apartment and student residence. Staying with a host family is a great way to improve your spanish and become immersed in the culture, whilst living with students is a really good way of meeting people and practice what has been learned at school. All three choices are equally popular with students. As well as language courses, the school offers many extra-curricular activities. These include visits to local places of interest, kite-surfing, cookery classes, video nights and other sports. Each weekend there is an excursion lasting one or two days, to areas of interest. These are Seville, Cordoba, Morocco, Cadiz and Ronda.

Impression
I really like Vejer de la Frontera, its a lovely place with lots of character. The school is small with a personal atmosphere and very helpful teachers and I learned a lot during my short stay. I would love to return soon!
