The historical and culturally-diverse San Sebastian is a large city located in the North of Spain, in the Basque Country region. It is postioned in th Bay of Biscay and has a population of approximately 180,000 people. The surrounding region is largely undiscovered and is the home to some incredible wildlife, favoured by walkers, trekkers and mountain bikers alike. San Sebastian is a city where old meets new, with a very stylish centre with lots of modern, high-end shops and classical Basque districts. There are many attractive and trendy bars in the city which are enjoyed by a young crowd. Away from the hustle and bustle there are some lovely restaurants in the traditional Basque style which offer a range of delicious food. The region is well known for its cheap tapas as well and is available all over the city at a number of nice venues. San Sebastian has a beautiful coastline and three well-known beaches, La Concha, Ondaretta and La Zurriola. La Concha was made popular by Queen Isabel and is considered by many to be one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, Ondaretta stands at the foot of Mount Igeldo and is overlooked by some beautiful villas and gardens and has an aristocratic feel to it and La Zurriola can be found on the bank of the river. Recently the beach has undergone construction to work to reclaim land from the sea, but its splendour has remained intact.

Our partner school Lacunza is over 40 years old, which makes it one of the oldest language schools in all of Spain. The school is on the edge of the city centre and has excellent facilities. These include 10 classroom with air conditioning and audio-visual technology, a well-stocked library, computers with internet access, a canteen with a coffee machine and a spacious terrace in the traditional basque style. The language school in is run by a dedicated team of experienced teaching professionals, each with the necessary credentials. The school has a professional but friendly atmosphere that encourages the best language development.
Social Programme
The accommodation for students is in the form of host families and shared student apartments. Both types of accomodation provide the student with a great opportunity of practising their spanish and meeting new people. All accommodation has been selected and is visited regularly by the staff. The city is a unique point of departure for a wide range of activities, like horse-riding, mountain-biking, surfing, hang-gliding and excursions to scores of interesting places in the vicinity. You can also complete your language course with intercambios (exchanges with Spanish students) that are organized by the school on request.

Impression
San Sebastian was a real surprise to me and I am glad I took the gamble. The people were exceptionally friendly, the scenery was mesmerising and even the weather appeared to be cooperative. What is more, the tapas in these parts are matchless! I was able to practice my Spanish at the bars in the old town centre very regularly… San Sebastian is really a fabulous place to learn Spanish.
