Playa del Carmen is an attractive Mexican tourist resort on the south east coast of the country. A relatively large resort with a population of approximately 100,000 people, the resort is favoured by holidaymakers and travellers due to its warm climate all year round and its vicinity to the equator. The city has expanded in size and population figures over the last 10 years, due to the influx of tourists drawn to the area. The city is located in the centre of Mexico's Riviera Maya in the state of Quintana Roo. In the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula, this small city is approximately 35 minutes from Cancun's international airport and 40 minutes from Tulum. Once upon a time, Playa del Carmen was a small fishing town and the inhabitants lead relatively simple lives. A ferry service was created to Cozumel, known for its world-famous scuba diving and while passing through the town, people were attracted by the lack of crowds and the beautiful beaches on offer. In reality it was a quieter version of Cancun, and tourist figures gradually started to climb. Today "Playa" is a lovely resort with nice shops, bars, restaurants and hotels with good facilities. Fortunately the government has tried to maintain Playa del Carmen's reputation and splendour as a historical fishing and artists colony by restricting building work and development. Very few buildings have more than three storeys as a result of the restrictions, maintaining the historical architecture and charm of the town.

Apart from the language courses, the school offers a lot of different excursions, for example a visit to the interesting places Tulum, Xel-ha, Coba and Chichen-Itza. A few of the activities are workshops in cooking, art, crafts, salsa dancing, movies, Mexican folklore, parties and picnics. Horse riding, surfing, kite-surfing or diving are a few of the many sports you can do. The Mexican Caribbean is one of the best places in the world to scuba dive and snorkel. Arrangements can be made for those who would like to experience the natural wonders of the Caribbean Sea. Students can learn to dive in a few days. All levels of certification are available.
