Oaxaca is a city and state on the south coast of Mexico. Boasting over 250 km of beautiful beaches and a wonderful climate all year round, tourists flock here each year. With its ethnic, cultural and historic richness, it is an ideal place to experience the beauty of Mexico and its people. Due to the appreciation for ancestral traditions and its colonial architecture, UNESCO has named the city a sight of special interest. The city has a population of 260,000, with a further 250,000 living in the metropolitan area. The colonial city dates back to 1532 when Spanish followers of Hernan Cortes succesfully asked the Queen of Spain for control of the land. A city in the neighbourhood had already been founded by King Carlos V of Spain on the basis of a charter, but Cortes sought to have the region as part of his ownership, with the settlers removed. The charter presented by the Queen secured the rights of the townspeople. The city's historic centre is laid out in traditional spanish style with a grid of streets surrounding the central square, zócalo. Within this square are most of the important buildings. Unfortunately, much of the city's originally buildings were destroyed or badly damaged by earthquakes. Although rebuilt in the tradtional Spanish style, much of the architecture only dates back to the 18th century, but has maintained its charisma and charm. Historical buildings of interest include the Cathedral of Oaxaca, the San Augustin church, the Governer's palace and the numerous museums on offer. The local area is known for its creative, talented artists and many different styles. The artists use everything from clay and fabrics to leather, iron and jewellery, making the region one of the main producers of these goods.
Learn Spanish in a beautiful environment

The school offers one-day excursions to Monte Alban, Hierve el Agua, "el Tule" tree, Mezcal distilleries, and beautiful churches and convents. The language school also offers two and three day excursions to Puerto Escondido, Puerto Angel and Huatulco, where you can enjoy the beautiful beaches of the Pacific and the relaxed, fun atmosphere of the cities. You can take part in other activities, such as trips to neighbouring towns, visits to archaeological zones, mountain biking tours, rappelling, hiking, rock climbing or paragliding.
