Madrid is the sparkling capital and largest city of Spain, home to culture, style and history and is one of the most famous cities in the world. Located in the centre of the country between the Castile-Leon and Castile-La Mancha regions, Madrid is considered to be the major centre of the Iberian Peninsula due to its market size, standard of living and economic output. Not only is Madrid the capital of Spain but is also the headquarters of the Spanish Government, the monarchy's residence and the country's major political centre. Madrid has a population of approximately 3 million with a further 2 million in the surrounding region. The stunning region has a temperate, Mediterranean climate with warm weather in the summer and cool but comfortable temperatures in the winter. Extremely hot temperatures in the summer are relatively rare but do occur from time to time. The city is served by a major international airport, Barajas, which is also the centre of Iberia Airlines. Barajas airport is the gateway to the Iberian Peninsula, Europe and the United States of America. It is one of the top 20 busiest airports in the world, with close to 40 million passengers passing through each year. Madrid also has an excellent public transport service, with buses, trains and the Madrid Metro. Besides, a whirlwind of culture, glamour, history and language, Madrid is the heartbeat of Spain in every respect! Although it has a modern infrastructure, the city has maintained its historic look and feel of years gone by. Architectural points of interest include the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Teatro Real, the Buen Retiro park, the 19th century National Library and the Prado Museum, to name but a few. The city has many bars and restaurants, from classic eateries and tapas bars to trendy venues with live music. Madrid really is a wonderful place to visit.

Social programme
Our partner school in Madrid has an excellent atmosphere and a very international flavour. The student population is made up of an average of 20 nationalities. The presence of Spanish students makes it very easy for intercambios (exchanges) to be organized. A city like Madrid has so much to offer and the school has a number of extra-curricular activities on offer. There are frequent excursions to El Escorial, Toledo, Salamanca, Cuenca and Segovia, guided tours of Madrid, museaum visits and a tour of the Royal Palace. Every fortnight, a party with tapas and Spanish wine is organized at school.

Impression
I will continue to remember my language course in Madrid for a very long time owing to the matchless hospitality and friendliness of its citizens. There is so much to experience and enjoy. I went out on a daily basis with Spaniards, a factor that enabled me to explore the city and the Spanish language to the very fullest. Furthermore, I took flamenco lessons! It was so lovely and I just can’t help carrying on with learning Spanish and flamenco lessons when I get back home.
