Havana, Cuba
Spanish courses in Havana. Extraordinary culture and history

Cuba is a Latin American country situated in the Caribbean Sea and is the largest island in the Caribbean region. The country is the most heavly populated of all Caribbean islands and countries with a population of 11.3 million inhabitants. The country has over 3,700 km of coastline and is the home to some of the most incredible flora and fauna in the world, as well as a tropical climate that is moderated by trade winds, with warm temperatures. The mean temperature for January is 21 degrees, whilst in July it is 27 degrees. There is a drier season from November to April, and a wetter season from May to October. Cuba lies in the path of hurricanes and tropical storms, which are most common in September and October. Havana is the principal city and capital of Cuba, positioned in the north west of the country. The city has a large port and is the primary business centre of Cuba. The city and surrounding region has a population of 2.3 million and a metropolitan area population in excess of 3 million, making Havana the largest city in the whole Caribbean region and arguably the most important city of the region. As the city was founded in 1515, it is also one of the oldest founded in the Western Hemisohere by Europeans. It was protected by walls and fortifications as the city was often attacked by French corsairs and pirates. Much of the city still contains architecture from this period. Cuba is one of the most fascinating and culturally-diverse countries in the world, drawing on cultural influences from many different parts, but has a very Spanish and Latin feel and consquently Spanish is the national language of the country. Music and dance are very important parts of life here, with locals singing and dancing long into the night - and we are pretty sure you will too!

Learn Spanish in Havana
The main point of recognition in Havana is the famous boulevard, "de Malecón". This starts near the old town, La Habana Vieja. Picturesque and fascinating remanants of the affluence of the past can be found especially in this old town centre. At the other end of the "Malecón" (which stretches approx. 7 kilometres along the coast) is the comparatively luxurious quarter, Vedado, where you will stay and learn Spanish.

Social programme
Your language course in Cuba is not complete without a visit to one of the rum-museums and/or tobacco factories. For lovers of sports, there is the opportunity to go horse-riding, scuba diving and to cool off at one of the fascinating beaches, after having been held spellbound by the wonders of this country. The students come together every Thursday evening to discuss the plans for the weekend. One of the employees at the site will make sure the excursion wishes of the students are fulfilled! Make use of the opportunity to combine your language course with various activities / excursions, and explore the diversified landscape and the historic cities of the country, along with your fellow-students.

Impression
After having received Spanish language lessons in Santiago de Cuba for 3 weeks, I travelled on to Trinidad and Havana. Cuba is a beautiful country with a long history, friendly people and of course the characteristic 50's American cars. I would love to go back.
