Santiago de Chile, Chile
Spanish courses in Santiago de Chile. A rugged Latin heartland

Chile is a beautiful South American country along the west coast of the continent, positioned between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain range. It is a long and narrow coastal country stretching for over 4,600 km north to south, but only 430 km at its widest point from west to east. The geography and climate are varied, with the Atacama desert in the north of the country the driest place on earth and the south a collection of islands and fjords. The most extreme south of the country is home to ice fields and glaciers, as it is very close to Antarctica. The sheer variety is such an attraction to travellers and tourists. Santiago is the capital and principal city of the country, situated in the country´s central valley at an altitude of 520 metres. Over the last two decades, the city has experienced excellent economic growth and has become one of Latin America´s most attractive and influential cities. The city has had substantial suburban development and now boast a number of shopping malls and some impressive high-rise architecture. The region has a mediterranean climate with reasonably hot summers and humid winters. During the summer months (November to March) temperatures can reach 35 degrees and in the winter there is occasional snowfall. Chile is one of the world's outdoor sports 'capitals'. People come from all over the world for rafting, hiking, mountain biking, climbing, surfing, and skiing. The south contains the famous lakes region and Patagonia while the north has one of the world's driest deserts. Due to Santiago's location being in the heart of country, beaches are only 100 kilometres to the west, while the Andes mountains begin to rise at the city's eastern edge. Comfortable, long-distance buses provide convenient access to the north's deserts and the south's lakes. The city's cosmopolitan area is home to 5 million people and supports many cultural and nocturnal opportunities - from theatre to all night salsa clubs. There's a wide variety of activities to supplement your Spanish language course.

Social programme
Studying a language abroad means more than attaining fluency. The school also wants to ensure that your time in Latin America will be the experience of a lifetime. To help you gain new Latin perspectives and to best understand the local culture, the school takes on the responsibility to coordinate optional social events. A typical student week involves activities such as outings to salsa clubs, museum tours, happy hours, and local festivals. Overnight weekend excursions include coastal trips, visits to colonial villages, and outdoor adventures. The accommodation is in the form of a host family or in a shared apartment. Both are an excellent way of practising Spanish and for meeting new people. The host families are very friendly and have a lot of experience in looking after foreign students. All accommodation used by students has been selected by the school and has an excellent location with the appropriate facilities. The accomodation is inspected regularly to ensure standards are being maintained.
