This exam is the only official qualification recognised by Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. It is also widely recognised in the business world.

The D.E.L.E course consists of twenty-five lessons per week with a maximum of 11 students per class and lasts 4, 8 or 11 weeks. The first and second lessons every day focus on grammar. The next two lessons are conversation classes and the last lesson is an exam practice session using past exam papers.

As the exam has an oral and then a written part, the D.E.L.E course involves quite a few audiovisual comprehension exercises, specialized texts, and compositions which gradually increase in difficulty depending on the level of the exam for which the student wishes to prepare.
The Certificate exam is for intermediate-level students, the Basic for those in the advanced level and the Superior only for those with a fluent knowledge of Spanish.

If a student is at beginner's level when he/she arrives, then three months should be adequate preparation time for the Certificate exam. If the student is at an intermediate level, he/she should be able to prepare for the Basic exam in the same time frame. The same goes for students at advanced level with the Superior exam. At the school they only prepare students for the Basico and Superior Diploma exams.
Exam dates are set by the Spanish Government and typically fall in the second or third weeks of May and November.
