Learn Italian in San Bartolomeo al Mare, a pleasant and friendly seaside resort in the Liguria region of north-western Italy. San Bartolomeo al Mare is positioned 90km southwest of Genoa and is relatively small with a population of just 3,000 inhabitants. The town is positioned in the centre of a wide bay between Diano Marina and Cervo Ligure, in a landscape dominated by the sea and has lovely climate, especially in the summer with long sunny days and warm temperatures. The winter is mild, with temperatures ranging between 10 and 15 degrees celsius. The local Ligurian cuisine is delicious and is a big tourist attraction. Based on local produce, there are a few particular favourites. Farinata is a thin, crisp, pizza-like pancake made from stirring chickpea flour into a mixture of water and olive oil to form a loose batter, and baking it in the oven. It may be seasoned with fresh rosmary, pepper and sea salt and like pizza it may also be topped with sausages, onions, gorgonzola cheese, artichokes or other ingredients. Gianchetti is a selection of whitebait caught with special nets during the early part of the year. The fish are lightly boiled in salted wter and served hot with lemon juice and oil. Finally corzetti are a special type of pasta unique to the Ligurian region shaped with a special wooden hand-tool and dressed with walnut sauce. With San Bartolomeo al Mare being a seaside resort, water sports are very popular, especially windsurfing and sailing. There are also a number of scuba diving spots and beautiful coves in the region, with culturally diverse flora and fauna. The resort has a number of sandy, unspoilt beaches where students can sunbathe or have a swim in the sea.
